Service Learning

Small groups of youth (any age) study their community's needs and brainstorm ideas to address the issue or problem, develop a plan of action, carry-out their plan of action, and evaluate the outcome of their service.

Service-learning is a meaningful connection between the youth and their communities and/or the people living in their home town, and provides specific outcome-based program components that:

  • encourage youth to be life-long community servants or civic leaders.

  • provides real-life experiences that can improve a youth's workplace skills.

  • enhances the youth's personal development.

  • gives youth a feeling of competency through active participation rather than being passive recipients of adult support.

This program allows youth to see the "big picture" of a community or the needs of specific citizens, and encourages them to find solutions to the issues rather than wait for someone else to take charge of the situation. An important aspect of service-learning is reflection as it allows the youth to break down the end result in terms of the original project plan and accept responsibility for their decisions. All-in-all, this special program emphasizes the extent that youth can have on making positive changes for their communities and the citizens who reside in them.
